The Next River: The Tennessee

We got back from Nashville and spent 2 nights at Green Turtle Bay on Barclay Lake which is actually on the Cumberland River. (Oh and yes they have a bunch of wild turtles that come running if someone is on the pier. They wait to get fed turtle food sold at the Marina.  I’ve come to the conclusion that turtles are kind of dumb.  The fish got way more food than the turtles.  Yes I had to feed them) There are still a lot of Looper boats there.  We ran into a dear friend of ours Milo DeVries’ cousin Ward and Jean Verseput.  We had a big group 25 to  30 people at an in prompt to Docktails gathering.  Lots of fun.

We went to the Yacht Club for dinner.  Believe it or not, this is dry county.  You can BYO but they can’t sell it.  There were all these wooden lockers on the the wall.  I joked that it was the Yacht club members booze lockers.  OMG it actually was just that.

We did all the necessities as in Laundry Shopping etc. We took off this morning and crossed into Kentucky Lake that is officially the Tennessee River.

We did a short day of travel and are anchored in Pisgah Bay on Kentucky Lake. It was quite windy and there were 2 foot seas on Kentucky Lake.  We felt like we were on Lake Michigan. Thanks to Steve and Teresa Lasher for recommending this beautiful spot.  There is an old quarry just around the corner that we spent the whole day at.  We packed a lunch and took the dinghy and off we went. We did a little reading, lunching, hiking, photographing, and fishing.  We watched some kids jump from the high walls.  We didn’t feel that adventurous today.

This made me wonder if the Whitefords were here when they did the Kentucky Lake.

Nashville, Tennessee

We branched off on our own about a week ago.  We went down the Cumberland river for 3 days to get to Nashville.  We found the most beautiful anchorage.  For now we are calling it our favorite. It has high bluffs on one side and was quiet and secluded.

Foot bridge across the river.

Life goes on when you live on a boat just like when you live at home.  Once arriving we had enough hours on the engine that the oil needed to be changed and it is easier to do when the engine is warm. Before heading into town Scott changed the oil and we both showered and off the Music City USA.

We had to walk across the foot bridge to get to the heart of the City and there was a huge fundraiser on the bridge with a long table the whole length of the bridge. It was to raise money for the green spaces in Nashville. How cool to set it up on the bridge.

Nashville is a happening city.  We walked Broadway just to see what Nashville is all about.  We had dinner and went to a few Honky Tonks to catch some of the acts. img_3498

The next day we went to the Rayman auditorium.  The origin of The Grand Ol”Oprey. It has been restored and is somewhat of a museum, but they still use it for performances.

Had lunch at the Acme Seed and Feed (where another high school friend’s son in law works, but he was off) We spend a good part of the afternoon listening to Jake Maurer at Tootsies’s.  He was fabulous, funny and had a great band….Why isn’t he a star?  The place was absolutely packed.

Found this carved in our table at Tootsies. I guess we were in the right place.

We were told to go to Skulls for the best dinner in Nashville, but it was raining too hard to walk that far.  We had limited time, enjoyed ourselves, and are back on the river to head toward the Tennessee River to get back on the Great Loop Track.  Hope to catch up the Sanctuary, Jacie Lynn and other boats we have met along the way.

OK computer geniuses…. Why are my pictures posting sideways.  They look fine on my screen. For some crazy reason they import sideways, so I rotate them, save them, and import them and they look fine…that is until y’all see them and have to stand on your head to see them.  Sorry.

Jack is on board!

Before I tell you about Jack, I want to mention that there may be days or even a week that you don’t hear from us because we don’t have internet.  So please keep checking and all of the sudden there may be several posts.

Now for Jack:

Jack is on board.  Well actually Jack has always been on board, but has never had a name until now. Who is Jack?  Jack is our Autopilot.  What is Auto Pilot?:  It is like cruise control on a car only it controls the steering not the speed.  How did Jack get his name?  Jack has been wandering from the left to right for no apparent reason, we figured he’s just misbehaving like a kid.  Scott tends to call someone a Jack Wagon when they misbehave or act like a jerk etc.  It’s a kinder, gentler way of calling them a Jackass. Scott was frustrated with Jack. After many different styles of discipline, his wandering ways continued. Thus Jack got his name.  So new discipline started. Just like a child he encouraged Jack to be on a higher performance level and Jack straighten out.  The only difference in training a child and Jack is that Scott wouldn’t call a child a Jack wagon.
